We are very excited to announce the return of our annual open call exhibition, Open Door, which will be celebrating it's 17th incarnation this year. This year's juror is Pao Houa Her. Pao is a visual artist living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Pao works across multiple genres and technologies of photography to address Hmong identity and related notions of desire and belonging within the Hmong American community. Pao holds a BFA in Photography from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, MN, and an MFA in Photography from Yale University, CT. She is the recipient of many prestigious fellowships and grants, and has exhibited extensively in Minnesota, as well as across the United States, and more recently, in Southeast Asia.
Pao had this to say about the selections she made this year, "These are works by artists who work in a variety of mediums. The works are figurative, they sometimes feel nostalgic but most importantly, they are familiar. This collection of work is my attempt to investigate the dynamics of the everyday, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumption of what the everyday means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, this is my attempt to fabricate an illusion; to conjure the realm of our imagination."
