Swans and Horses
New Work by Amelia Biewald
I’m creating dimensional paintings that are as much about the quality of line and spacial elements as they are about the shadows and relief portions. Combining my love for the horse with my interest in aggressive weather patterns, I am developing imagery which unites the pounding hooves and fight or flight response of the wild horse with the similar barrage of thunder created by electrical charges within storms. These large conceptual landscape works contain powerful animals which point to our collective feelings relating to climate change and our impending future and point to options we may have to do something about our climate environment. I was recently awarded a Puffin Foundation Grant in 2024 for artworks in this series. “For the past 25 years the work of the Puffin Foundation has sought to educate and enrich the lives of our citizenry by supporting work of applicants that address the social issues of our times.”
I am also showing brand new works dealing with the profound myth, poetry, and imagery dealing with the story of Leda and the Swan. This tale, however usually pictured bright and with rainbow skies, is actually dark and turbulent, and I strive to communicate this in my new works. These new works center around the eerie poem by William Butler Yeats, Leda and the Swan, 1923.
Leda and the Swan
A sudden blow: the great wings beating stillAbove the staggering girl, her thighs caressedBy the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill,He holds her helpless breast upon his breast.
How can those terrified vague fingers pushThe feathered glory from her loosening thighs?And how can body, laid in that white rush,But feel the strange heart beating where it lies?
A shudder in the loins engenders thereThe broken wall, the burning roof and towerAnd Agamemnon dead.
Being so caught up,So mastered by the brute blood of the air,Did she put on his knowledge with his powerBefore the indifferent beak could let her drop?
Artist Bio:
Amelia Biewald recreates intrigues, telling stories about the confluence of myth, history, science and scandal. She received a BFA with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design and Goldsmith’s College, University of London, and then pursued sculptural work at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where she received her MFA. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2004 and has received many artist awards, residencies, and fellowships for her work including a Skowhegan Fellowship, a Bush Foundation Fellowship, and a Jerome Foundation Fellowship. She was awarded space by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and has spent time at Art Garda Residency in Sirmione, Italy. She is a currant recipient of a Puffin Foundation Grant for her artwork, and is working on future exhibitions through the Symposia! Program for the Michael David & Co. Gallery at Art Cake in Brooklyn, NY.
Amelia Biewald works actively as a professional artist, educator and curator. Amelia is a member of Rosalux Gallery in Minneapolis, MN, WAAM in Woodstock, NY and the Equity Gallery in NYC. She splits her time between the Army Of Frogs Studio in High Falls, NY where she works as director and Minneapolis, MN.

Rosalux Gallery hours are 12-4 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.
The gallery is located at 315 W 48th Street in Minneapolis. Rosalux is always free and open to the public.
