2024 had a lot of ups and downs and moved by us all pretty fast, so we thought it would be nice to hit pause and take a moment to look back on all of the positive things that the artists of Rosalux accomplished this past year.
Hend Al-Mansour dazzled Rosalux audiences this past September with her exhibit, Sketching In Cyberspace: My Little Secrets, with her digital creations, paintings, and screen prints throughout the gallery. Hend also kept busy this year with several mural projects as well as taking part in the exhibit, Visage, at Gamut gallery in the spring. Her biggest achievement of the year however, was the fantastic multi media exhibition titled, Contain Me, at The SOO Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis. You can still see Contain Me if you hurry, the exhibition ends January 5th!
Ute Bertog kept herself very busy in 2024 as well. In addition to creating a multitude of paintings and pottery throughout the year, she found time to attend the Benton Projects residency this past fall while regularly exhibiting her works at the Galleri 167 in Minneapolis in addition to her hard work at Rosalux throughout the year. Ute also had her paintings featured in the exhibit, A Sense Of Surface, at The Painting Center in New York City this past June and July.
What does Amelia Biewald do when she isn't curating and exhibiting at her Amy Of Frogs studio in the Hudson Valley? She shows her work, that's what she does. Taking part in exhibitions with The Equity Gallery, The Satellite Gallery, Techne Art Center, Front Room Gallery, Art Cake, and Wired Gallery over the past year has kept Amelia on her toes but not busy enough to keep her from creating amazing and irreverent artwork.
Priscilla Briggs had a big year too! Not only was she included in the annual Fine Arts Exhibition at The Minnesota State Fair, she also blew the doors off Rosalux in April with her outstanding exhibition of new works titled, Terrain. Priscilla kept active in the book scene with the publication of her latest photobook, Case Studies In Sustainability: Poderi Borselli, as well as participating in the Foto Matter book fair and Printed Matter Zine fairs as well.
While Dan Buettner spent a lot of his year preparing new work for his upcoming Rosalux exhibition this coming February, he also spent his time recording albums and performing live with his bands Skulpture and Broken Hearts Are Blue throughout the year. He may not look like it in the photo above, but this is something that he says he likes to do.
You'd better have packed a bag if you had wanted to keep up with Betsy Ruth Byers over the past year, with research trips and residencies taking her as far as Iceland and as near as The Grand Marais Art Colony, Betsy has logged a lot of miles. Betsy also had exhibitions on the itinerary this past year with her amazing, Chronosequence: Field Notes from Mama Cayambe by Betsy Byers, opening at Rosalux in March followed by, Beckon, at the Women's Club Of Minneapolis in August.
Tara Costello made a great impression on all of those who visited Rosalux in the month of May for her exhibition, Golden Embers. Not only that, she kept the hammer down for the rest of the year and produced work for an exhibition at Dutch Bar in the fall and Galleri 167 throughout the year.
Duane Ditty kicked off the year with an amazing show of his epic abstractions at Rosalux in February and kept the fire going throughout the rest of the year keeping up with commissions and exhibitions. He had an exhibit of paintings over the summer at the Hallberg Center For The Arts along with exhibits for ROAM in International Market Square in Minneapolis and Lakes Area Realty in St. Paul.
John Gaunt has been spending much of his year preparing for what looks to be another spellbinding exhibition of new work at Rosalux this coming March. John has also spent a lot of his year enriching our arts community through his volunteer work with Rosalux and professorship at MCAD, but he still managed to find time to tease us about what is to come with his entry into the MCAD Faculty Show this past September.
What did Mary Gibney get up to this year besides rocking out and just being cooler than everyone else? Mary painted and painted and painted and the result was one of the most anticipated and talked about shows at Rosalux this year! Her October exhibition was featured in the Twin Cities Art Week celebration and featured an artist talk with Andy Sturdevant and Bill Lindke moderated by Kris Elias about their shared love of dive bars and bar culture that packed the house this past October.
Avigail Manneberg wowed us all with her powerful gestural paintings this past June at Rosalux with her latest body of work titled, Power Play. Avigail also had work presented at the Minnesota Museum Of American Art as part of the family-oriented exhibit, Together, as well as the MCAD Faculty Exhibit in September.
Eleanor McGough may be busy cutting and painting to get ready for her upcoming Rosalux show in August of 2025 but she certainly has been out and about in the past year as well. Eleanor's studio has been a mainstay attraction of the Northrup King Building for years and this year was no different with her open studio events for Art-A-Whirl, Summer Sizzle, and other annual programming in the neighborhood. If you didn't run into Eleanor out and about supporting other artists whose exhibits she faithfully attends you might have spied her epically organic paintings at Veronique Wantz Gallery in the north loop as well.
Terrence Payne was busy taking himself and his artwork on the road this past year as well. He started off the year by exhibiting his work at The Other Art Fair in Chicago to great success and then returned to Minneapolis to begin work on his next show, Snug, which is currently on display at Rubine Red Gallery in Palm Springs, California. In between these trips, Payne also managed to find out how the sausage is made at the Minnesota State Fair by serving as a judge in the fine arts competition.
Being a new parent is enough to fill up anybody's calendar but somehow Drew Peterson managed to pack in some great art projects as well. Drew completed the VALT 2 Mural project through his work with JXTA Arts in Minneapolis this summer and also began his ambitious 120-month screen project which will feature one screen print each month for the next ten years before it is completed. Be on the lookout for Drew's inaugural exhibit with Rosalux this coming April as well!
Was Areca Roe busy this year? Busy may be an understatement for the amount of projects she was involved in this past year. Areca had films in the Confluence and Plantpop film festivals, had her work published in The New York Times newspaper and in the Of Covid: Collective Trauma book, had her work acquired by the MN Historical Society, made a couple of music videos and spent time in Iceland on a SIM residency. On top of all of that Areca has been busy exhibiting her photographs as well with a current exhibition on view at the Fotografiska Museum in Shanghai through March of next year as well as exhibits at the RACA Gallery in Mankato, Ridgewater College Galleries, Foto Matter Collective, Echo.Echo Art Collective, and SPE in St Louis!
On top of all of his volunteer work with Rosalux helping out with openings, Open Door, construction projects, and much more, David Malcolm Scott has spent a great deal of his time this past year preparing for his upcoming exhibit this January at Rosalux. It promises to be an amazing way to start off the new year as David's watercolor paintings and scrolls are always crowd favorites.
2024 was a full year for Laura Stack which saw the opening of her exhibit, "Diary of an Artist" by Laura Stack: Paintings and Drawings 2001-2024, at Roslaux this past August. This exhibit was a thoughtful reflection on the progress of Laura's work over the past 20+ years and what path it might take in the future. Laura also had her work featured in the exhibit, Gui/Gooey, at Plexus Projects in Brooklyn, New York which began this past October and is on view through the end of this month.
