Ute Bertog

Rosalux Gallery is pleased to present two solo shows by Minnesota artists Ute Bertog and Betsy Ruth Byers. In Still the Night Bertog continues to explore language and communication through paintings, print media and sound. Whereas previous work was born out of the process of reading, this new body of work is conceptualized as an exercise in listening. In Freeze & Thaw  Betsy Ruth Byers employs abstract painting as a means to examine the complex relationship between our bodies and transient landscapes.

By re-contextualizing chance encounters, found materials and ready-made language, Ute Bertog introduces open spaces into the viewing and reading experience that expand preconceived notions about things. The goal is to generate a welcoming atmosphere where imagination and speculation is allowed to flourish. In this regard Bertog uses the inherent latency of abstraction in her paintings to full effect. Starting out with a single letter, words or sentences she soon challenges given shapes and meanings until the legibility is either severely undermined or completely taken away and new understandings emerge.

In her studio, Betsy Ruth Byers revels in the space between uncertainty and understanding. For Byers, painting is a corporeal activity that enables both discovery and imagination. Her work explores the slippage between real and fabricated landscapes; formation and deconstruction, and objective and subjective knowledge. Led by sensual experiences of the landscape, Byers seeks to interweave the psychological space and materiality of paint on each canvas.  Betsy Ruth Byers
