Joe Hall, Feng Sun Chen, and Michael Flatt are here to tell us what it is to be an animal transformed by your cuts. Please join Our Flow is Hard for an intimate BYOP/C/R/M (Bring your own pillow / cushion / rug / mat) and BYOB (Bring your own beer / wine). We’ll be circling up, we’ll be crossing legs, we’ll be turning the lights down so you and I can lose track of where exactly the poems aren’t coming from.

About the readers:
Joe Hall was born in the woods and is devoted to Cheryl. His three books are Pigafetta Is My Wife (Black Ocean 2010), The Devotional Poems (Black Ocean 2013), and, in collaboration with Chad Hardy, The Container Store Vols I & II (SpringGun 2012). He currently resides in Buffalo, New York.

Feng Sun Chen’s first book is Butcher’s Tree from Black Ocean. She is also the author of chapbooks “Ugly Fish” from Radioactive Moat, “Arcane Carnal Knowledge” from Pangur Ban Party (and Night Vegetable Press), and “blud” from Spork Press. Recent poems do or will appear on her blog, in Conduit, Kill Author, Claudius App, and other places. She is recent graduate of the MFA program at the University of Minnesota and sometimes blogs about potatoes and art for Montevidayo.com.

Michael Flatt is an associate editor for Counterpath and Field Editorial. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in 1913:A journal of forms, The Destroyer, Horse Less Review, SpringGun, 32 Poems, and elsewhere. His reviews of poetry and fiction have appeared in Colorado Review, New Pages, Octopus Magazine, and Cutbank. His book Absent Receiver came out on SpringGun Press in March 2013.

Rosalux Gallery is proud to announce the opening of the upcoming two person exhibition of new work by Melissa Loop and Amelia Biewald titled Colonies. The exhibition is June 1st- June 30th 2013. The opening reception is Saturday June 1st from 7pm-11pm.

Melissa Loop is a landscape painter who mines the long history of the genre and subverts it with her fantasy landscapes. Her hyper-colored canvases with their haphazard drips, neon spray paint, jumbled digitized shapes, and rainbow-infused skies literalize the artificiality of imagined paradises and bespeak her concern for ongoing globalization, colonization, and touristic expansion in exotic locations.

Melissa Loop lives in Minneapolis. She is 2012/2013 recipient of the Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists as well as a 2013 Minnesota State Arts Board Grant recipient. She her solo shows include Soo VAC in Minneapolis, MN, Breeze Block Gallery in Portland OR, and has also been featured in New American Painting Magazine. Melissa graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2005 where she was a the Vanderlip Travel Grant upon graduation.
Amelia Biewald: The lights of perverted science, wedded with an ambiguous desire most efficiently described as male, have by and large gifted conquered lands and souls with bald enslavement, firm acculturation, and frantic mineral extraction.

In this new body of work I see these new islands as an experimental model of the ‘fairer sex’ within and beneath the gaze of these impetuous conquerors. The lands are pure, fresh and comely, but are also in terrible need of taming and corseting. I propose that the spasms of colonial civilization can also be seen as a history of fashion; perhaps the very engine of chic.
As I rework the female form under this model, informed by the fascinating bondage of the triple goddess, I seek to recreate their alluring shorelines and interior landforms as a new frontier; a terra incognita waking up to itself after a long, strange dream.

Bart Vargas is from Bellevue, Nebraska. For over a decade, he has been exploring the artistic potential of trash and recyclable materials. Using pattern, repetition and form, he builds paintings, sculptures, and installations that blur the identity of these everyday materials, transforming them into playful, thought-provoking objects. Vargas wants his creations to act as artifacts and evidence of the early 21st century, and hopes to do so by using materials that are no longer needed or valued in an era of limited resources and extraordinary consumption and waste.

Featured reader, Peter Campion is the author of three books of poems, Other People, The Lions, and El Dorado (which comes out this fall)—all from the University of Chicago Press. He’s the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, the Larry Levis Reading Prize, the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He teaches in the M.F.A. Program at the University of Minnesota.

Isabel Harding grew up in Atlanta, GA, and is a graduate of Agnes Scott College. She is in her second year pursuing her MFA in Fiction at the University of Minnesota. Her work appears in the anthology Strangers in Paris: New Writing Inspired by the City of Light.

Zoë Miller grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated from The New School University in New York City as a Riggio Honors Fellow. Currently, she is pursuing an MFA in Fiction at the University of Minnesota. Her short stories and poems have appeared in pax americana, 12th Street, and Front Porch.

Patrick Whitfill recieved his PhD from Texas Tech University in the spring of 2008. Since then, he has lived and worked in Spartanburg, SC. His poetry and fiction has appeared in such journals as Beloit Poetry Journal, Tar River Review, Best New Poets, 32 Poems, Juked, Unsplendid, Linebreak and some other places, too. Besides teaching at a few places in the area, Patrick has worked as a bartender, waiter, freelance editor, line cook and as a cashier at an independent bookstore. Most of the time, he watches Netflix.

Reconstructed Space: New works by Jonas Criscoe & John Diebel
Reconstructed Space is an exhibition of new work from artists Jonas Criscoe and John Diebel opening in April at Rosalux Gallery. In this texture-laden show Mr. Criscoe, with his graffiti-laced assemblages and Mr. Diebel, through his intricately cut paper collage, examine built environments and the spaces they renegotiate through their interactions with nature and history. The exhibition opens April 6th and runs through the 28th with an opening reception with the artists Saturday, April 6th from 7-10 PM.

Artist Jonas Criscoe explores the way in which environments and landscapes are altered by our society, and nature’s ability to reclaim the spaces and the things that we abandon. A number of the works in his newest series were created using various found materials and imagery collected during way-finding walks and drives. They are, on the one hand, a conversation between old-time quilt making and modernist geometric abstraction while, on the other, a means of exploring the patina of wear and environmental exposure on materials and surfaces. Overlayed upon these surfaces are idioms of graffiti which reclaim lost or abandoned spaces with the voice of the individual, building up a patina that Mr. Criscoe calls “the aura of touch”.

Artist John Diebel’s work imagines alternate histories; worlds in which the idealism of such early 20th Century art movements as Suprematism, Constructuvism, and De Stijl have been implemented as the complete cultural revolutions that their manifestoes demanded. What happens to revolutionary zeal and the fervent desire to forge a New Humanity over the course of decades and in the face of seemingly immutable human nature? The specter of the Soviet Union’s doomed experiment in compromised ideals helps to inform Diebel’s dystopian visions. Here we find Imperial cities on the verge of decline, dominated by geometric edifices in primary colors, and over-flown by menacing architectonic drones. Worlds very different from those exhorted by artistic doctrine, but also not unlike our own world today.

Rosalux Gallery would like to announce the opening of the upcoming group exhibition entitled Kitsch. Rosalux has specially created this exhibition for Art-A-Whirl this coming May celebrating the Northeast Minneapolis art community. Kitsch polishes up the brassy chintz of art created for mass appeal and elevates it through our artists thoughtful renderings. Whether it is through the abstracted dog portraits of Shawn McNulty, the applied celestial plumbing onto mass produced art prints by Laura Stack or the not so still life floral arrangements of Terrence Payne, Kitsch promises to engage and entertain viewers while sparking new ideas of what can be expected from art in the realms of the brazen.
